Revised Calendar for the Remainder of the Year

Dear DeSoto Parish Families and Staff,

Following the impacts of Winter Storm Fern on our community, DeSoto Parish Schools experienced the loss of five instructional days across the district. To remain compliant with required instructional time while minimizing disruption, the DeSoto Parish School Board approved a revision to the 2025–2026 academic calendar at its February board meeting.

This revision balances three priorities: recovering lost instructional time, preserving the quality of instruction, and limiting disruption for students, staff, and families.

The 2025-2026 calendar revision outlines the following :

(1) February 20th (virtual)- counts as one attendance day gained (Day 1)
(2) February 23rd -already counted as an attendance day, however students have changed from virtual to face-to-face
(3) March 30th (virtual)- counts as one attendance day gained ( Day 2)
(4) April 6th- Staff and students return to school one day early from spring break and counts as one attendance day gained (Day 3)
(5) April 7th -already counted as an attendance day, however students have changed from virtual to face-to-face
(6) May 22nd- students attend for last day of school; one attendance day gained (Day 4)

Virtual/At-Home Learning Days will include low-tech or no-tech options, and assignments will be posted ahead of time to support family planning. Families requesting a virtual conference may contact their child’s teacher or school administration to schedule an appointment, as needed.

Please visit the DeSoto Parish Schools homepage, www.desotopsb.com, to access the revised calendar for the current year.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

For Students’ Sake,

Clay Corley
Superintendent

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood®.

Read this story to your child this week and discuss the question at the end.

Once upon a time, Leo the Lion was very frustrated. He had spent all morning building a magnificent "Space Tower" out of colorful blocks.

Just as he was finishing, his friend Mia the Mouse ran over and placed a bright yellow triangle block right on top. CRASH! The whole tower tumbled down.

"Mia! You ruined it!" Leo roared, his face turning red. "I was almost done, and you knocked it over on purpose!"

Leo was ready to stomp away, but then he remembered Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood. He took a deep breath. Instead of yelling more, he asked, "Mia, why did you put that block there?"

Mia looked sad and whispered, "I saw you were building a space tower. I thought it needed a star on top to guide the astronauts home. I just wanted to help."

Leo’s ears perked up. He hadn't realized Mia was trying to be kind! Because he listened with his ears, eyes, and heart, he understood that she wasn't being mean—she was being a friend.

"Oh," Leo said softly. "I understand now. I thought you were trying to break it."

Then, it was Leo’s turn to be understood. He said, "Next time, could you ask me before adding a piece? It was a very wobbly tower."

"I can do that!" Mia smiled.

Together, they built a new tower, even taller than the first, with a yellow star right on top. By seeking to understand first, Leo saved the day—and his friendship!

"How did Leo’s feelings change once he stopped to listen to Mia’s reason, and what might have happened if he never asked her 'why'?"
